Our sincere condolences to Jill and the entire Hoge family and friends. The loss of Russ creates a huge void in many lives which is an indication of his impact and character.
I had the distinct honor of working for and with Russ over the years, initially at Mobil Chemical and later at enVerde. He was a unique leader and executive. At Mobil, I saw him make some of the most challenging and consequential decisions, even with career-ending potential outcomes, because they were the right things to do. Those decisions positioned Mobil to be a leader in certain critical areas, leadership which they retain to this day thanks to his leadership and decisions from 30 years ago. I do not believe Russ received the recognition due to the actions he took. He risked much to make sure the right actions were taken. Those of us working with him certainly knew what he did.
Russ also demonstrated that senior leaders could be exceptional people. He showed that he cared for those he worked with. Russ was the first executive to know my spouse's name, and he insisted she join us for business dinners. Others just did not do that in those days. He rolled up his sleeves (literally) and was not afraid to lead by example. Being a leader was not just transactional for Russ but a way to collaborate to obtain the best outcomes possible.
At enVerde, Russ has been an invaluable mentor for us all. He enjoyed being "the wise man on top of the mountain" who we could go to for literally any subject. Russ provided simple answers for complex issues, constantly reminding us of who we were and who we wanted to be. His guidance and wisdom will be greatly missed.
Having known Russ for over 32 years, our relationship has grown from him being my boss's boss to being friends. It is the friendship we developed that I will miss the most, especially our regular non-business conversations. He has influenced me in many ways and I am grateful he knew that.
Russ loved his family and friends and spoke about them fondly all of the time. He will be missed by many. May his memory be a blessing to us all.
