Obituary of Joan E Crew

Joan Marie Egner Crew, 91, died peacefully on December 21, 2016, at her home in Fellowship Village in Basking Ridge, N.J. There will be a memorial service on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 1pm at St. Mark's Episcopal Church of Basking Ridge, N.J., with reception to follow at Fellowship Village. Mrs. Crew was the daughter of Louise Livingston Egner and Frederick A. Egner of Orange, New Jersey. Born in Orange, she received her education at the New Jersey State Teachers College (now Montclair State University). She was a student of French and Spanish, and an admired teacher of both languages in New Jersey and New York State. She taught at Montclair High School, Mountain View School in Mendham NJ, and Norwich High School until her retirement in 1991, affecting the lives of over a thousand students. An avid supporter of the arts, she received a lifelong love of music from her mother and father, which she inspired in her family and friends. She and her husband were lifelong patrons of the Metropolitan Opera. A beloved wife and mother and a constant friend to those who knew her, she was devoted to every community of which she was a part. Mrs. Crew traveled extensively, including many trips to visit family and friends both near and far, as well as expeditions to Chile and the U.K., and a year-long academic study in Mexico in 1943. She was passionately driven to seek new and enriching experiences throughout her entire life. Mrs. Crew was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Dr. Malcolm C. Crew, and is survived by her three sons, Drs. Richard M. Crew of Gainesville, Fla., Geoffrey B. Crew of Acton, Mass., and Roger F. Crew of Mercer Island, Wash., daughters-in-law Michelle Benoit, Harriet Schwartz, and Emma Crew, seven grandchildren, Alexander, Elizabeth, Hilary, Philip, William, Kathryn, and Rebekah, and one great-grandson, Maxwell. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to The Metropolitan Opera, the Fellowship Village Benevolent Fund, or St. Mark's Episcopal Church of Basking Ridge, N.J.
