Obituary of Sophie Jaskula

Sophie Zelasko Jaskula, 96, of Basking Ridge died Wednesday, April 27, at Brandywine Senior Living in Bridgewater after a short illness. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Sophie moved with her family to Poland when she was four years old. She lived there on the family farm until she was sixteen. In 1936 she came back to the United States and joined her two older siblings in Brooklyn, NY. During World War II she helped the war effort by working in a factory making radio tubes. In 1949 she married the love of her life, William Jaskula. They were married for 58 years until his death in 2008. Sophie was a member of the Church of St. James where she crocheted dozens of "Blankets of Blessings" baby blankets. Her greatest joy in life was her family and especially her much loved grandchildren. Surviving are her two daughters, Jane Marino (husband John) of East Dorset, VT and Susan Gannon (husband Harvey) of Bedminster, NJ; four grandchildren, Mark (Nina) Marino, Peter (Bryan Fleming) Marino, Geoffrey Gannon and Rebecca Gannon, and two great-grandchildren, Josephine and Abigail Marino. Visitation will be on Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at Gallaway and Crane Funeral Home, 101 S. Finley Ave, Basking Ridge, NJ from 5:00 – 8:00 pm. Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, May 4, 2016, 10:00am, at St. James Church, 184 S. Finley Ave, Basking Ridge, NJ. Interment will be at St. Gertrude's Cemetery in Colonia.
