Alan Milton Shaw, 85, of Basking Ridge, NJ, died after a short illness at Morristown Medical
Center on the evening of Sunday March 6 , 2016.
Born July 23, 1930, son of Samuel and Mildred of Bradley Beach, NJ, Mr. Shaw attained Phi
Beta Kappa at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. After graduating Harvard Law School, he
served in the U.S. Army, Quartermaster Corps? becoming a member of the New York State Bar
in 1959, he joined Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom.
In 1966 he helped start Athlone Industries, Parsippany, NJ as Vice President and General
Counsel, which company he served as Officer until its sale in 1993. As an Arbitrator
specializing in contract disputes since 1994, Mr. Shaw was active for over 20 years in the
American Arbitration Association, affiliated with NYSE, FINRA, NASD Dispute Resolution, and
Panelist, Contract Dispute Resolution Board of the City of New York.
His great love of the law, language, teaching, and the company of lively intellects was gratified
in his position of Adjunct Professor at Fordham University School of Law since 1996. For over
20 years, his commercial drafting seminar in business contracts and transactions was a source
of great joy to Mr. Shaw and pleasure to his students.
For over 15 years a trustee of the Washington Association of New Jersey, he served as Vice
President and Chairman of the Finance Committee. Mr. Shaw was further a lifelong patron of
the arts, not least Avery Fisher Hall, as well as a recognized benefactor of Morristown Medical
Center.
His professional affiliations included membership in the American and New York City Bar
Associations, and the New Jersey General Counsel Group. In private life Mr. Shaw belonged to
the Morris County Golf Club, the Morristown Club, the Harvard Club of NYC, and the Churchill

A devoted family man, Mr. Shaw was an avid reader of history and organizer of broadening
travels both domestically and abroad? his unquenchable intellectual curiosity led him to treat his
loved ones to everything from the Renaissance art of obscure Tuscan churches to MoMA. His
greatest interest, though, was in the company and discourse of his friends and family? to this
end his most enduring memory may be as most gracious host of long, warmly intimate dinners.
He will be greatly missed.

son Andrew Macbeth Shaw, affianced to Tamara Sand Lee, and grandsons Alan Macbeth Shaw
