Obituary of Timothy R Cutting

Timothy R. Cutting passed away peacefully at his home on November 3 at the age of 87 with his three children by his side. Born in Montclair, N.J. he was the son of the late Aaron and Marjorie (Baker) Cutting, and lived in Essex Fells, N.J. for over 75 years before moving to Basking Ridge in 2012. He graduated from The Lawrenceville School in 1947, with his two older brothers Rufus and Barry, who had just returned from serving in World War II. He graduated from Trinity College in 1951, where he was captain of the swim team. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1954 as a 1St lieutenant in the Korean War, where he saw combat. In 1958, he married the love of his life, Sally Smith, who predeceased him in 2004. In 1959, he began a distinguished career as an insurance broker, specializing in banking, with Marsh & McLennan until 1978, before retiring from Donald F. Smith & Associates in 1988. Known for his kindness, sense of humor and great faith, Tim's life was dedicated to volunteering his time to help others. He was a lifelong member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Essex Fells where he served as senior warden, crucifer and usher. He also served on the boards of Offender Aid and Restoration, in Newark, an organization assisting those who have been imprisoned, gain and maintain employment. Through O.A.R.'s Patchwork program, Tim and his late wife, Sally, were very active as mentors for the children of incarcerated women. He also served for many years on the board at the COPE Center in Montclair, which provides drug, alcohol and family crisis counseling to those in need. In his hometown of Essex Fells, he was a volunteer fireman for 20 years, served on the Town Council and Planning Board in various positions. He could be seen walking puppies at the Seeing Eye in Morristown for many years and was given a dog from them, who was his companion for ten years after his wife, Sally passed away. As an avid golfer, Tim was an active member of both the Montclair Golf Club and Sakonnet Golf Club in Little Compton, RI. He also spent many years playing paddle tennis at the Fells Brook Club in Essex Fells, where he served as its president. In addition to his wife and his parents, he is predeceased by his two brothers, Rufus B. Cutting and Aaron B. Cutting. He is survived by his children, Molly Werner and her husband, Paul, of Whitehouse Station, Timothy Jr., and his wife, Stephanie of Basking Ridge, and Lucy Probert and her husband Jim of Ridgewood. Tim is also survived by four grandchildren, whom he adored; Annie and Jimmy Probert and Sally and Charlie Cutting, as well as countless and beloved nieces and nephews and extended family and friends. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Essex Fells on Saturday, November 21, 2015 at 11 a.m. Internment will be private.
