Obituary of Samuel G Cahoon
Samuel G. Cahoon passed away January 13, 2014 at the Chelsea Assisted Living, Warren, NJ. Samuel reached his 100th Birthday on January 19, 2013.
Sam was born of Irish parents and immigrated to the United States with his father and brother, William, at the age of 5.
Sam had a storied career in advertising with Sears, in the catalog department. He served in WWII being drafted in 1942 and served as an Army Medic in the 100th Division, 398th Infantry of the Seventh Army. He received a field commission from Staff Sergeant to Second Lieutenant and was responsible for setting up forward aid stations. He earned a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart during campaigns in France and Germany, most notable the 4-5 months battle liberating the Citadel City of Bitche with the 100th becoming known as the "Sons of Bitche."
Serving until 1946, Samuel returned to Sears and continued his hobby of collecting and reproducing artifacts of the South West Plains Indians, notably the Sioux, while introducing others to the hobby and becoming a Plains Indian expert. He and his wife Julia shared 63 years together. Visitation will be held on January 16, 2015 at Gallaway and Crane Funeral Home, 101 S. Finley Avenue, Basking Ridge, NJ from 3:00 – 5:00 pm. Funeral Service will be held on January 17, 2015, 10:00am at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Somerset Hills Memorial Park, Basking Ridge.
