Obituary of Donald A Wiegand

Dr. Donald Wiegand, Ph.D. died in the early morning of Friday, Sept. 19, at the age of 87 at his home in Basking Ridge, NJ. He was born in Rochester, N.Y., on July 21, 1927, the son of Arthur and Mildred Wiegand, and was raised with a brother, Roger. He married Joan Engler on May 20, 2014, at a civil ceremony in Basking Ridge. Don and Joan were frequent world travelers who met 14 years ago during a trip to St. Martin. In the ensuing years they spent time in Belize, Aruba, St. Lucia and Antigua, and they also traveled extensively throughout the United States. Dr. Wiegand worked as a physicist at Picatinny Arsenal for 45 years before retiring in 2014. Prior to that he was a professor at Carnegie Mellon. He obtained his Ph.D in Physics from Cornell University earned his Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering, also from Cornell. His family would like him to be remembered for his generosity and kindness, and his frequent donations to many charitable causes. He is survived by his wife, Joan, of Basking Ridge; his brother Roger of Melbourne Beach, Fla.; daughters Caryn Neihold of Reno, Nev., and Kim Aull of Calgary, Canada; and four grandchildren. The Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 24, from 4-7 p.m. at the Gallaway and Crane Funeral Home, 101 South Finely Road., Basking Ridge, N.J 07920. The funeral service will be Thursday, Sept. 25, at 11 a.m. at the Gallaway and Crane Funeral Home followed by an Interment at Somerset Hills Memorial Park Cemetery in Basking Ridge, N.J.
