Obituary of Agnes A Nergaard

Agnes A. Nergaard, age 101, passed away on January 31, 2014 at Morris View Health Care Center, Morris Plains, New Jersey. She was born Agnes Alberta Baran on January 28, 1913, in Miner’s Mills, Pennsylvania. She was next to youngest girl of ten surviving children of Michael and Anna Baran, who came to the United States from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, now Slovakia. Mrs. Nergaard married John Bernard Liptock in the early 1930s and they moved to New Jersey, eventually settling in Stirling, where they both worked for U.S. Hammered Piston Ring Company which manufactured critical airplane parts during the Second World War. Their only child, Maryann, was born in 1949. John Liptock died in 1952. Mrs. Nergaard eventually moved to North Plainfield, and married Karl E. Nergaard. Maryann changed her name to that of her step-father, and served on the Long Hill Township Committee from 1993 to 2004. During that time, she was selected to serve as Mayor in 1996 and 1997 and Deputy Mayor in 2001, 2002 and 2003. She now serves as a Superior Court Judge in Morris County. Mrs. Nergaard worked as a nursing clerk for Muhlenberg Hospital in Plainfield, New Jersey. There she befriended a number of student nurses who referred to her as “mom” and with whom she corresponded throughout her long life. Before moving to Morris View in May, 2013, she lived at Ridge Oak Senior Housing in Basking Ridge for many years. Mrs. Nergaard maintained her wit, intelligence and strong personality to the end. She will be missed by all those with whom she shared her life. Mrs. Nergaard is survived by her daughter, Maryann Nergaard, and her son-in-law, William W. Hudzik.
