Obituary of William D Dana

William D. Dana, Jr. William Dale Dana, Jr., of Morristown, NJ and Livingston, MT, passed away peacefully on February 14, 2013, at his home of 51 years in Morristown. Born in 1929 in New York City and raised in Llewellyn Park, West Orange, NJ, he was the son of William D. Dana and Margaret Leach Dana. After graduating in 1947 from The Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, CT, and from Princeton University in 1951, Bill enlisted in the U.S. Army in July of 1951 as a Psychology War Officer. Shortly thereafter, Bill married Emma Joy Linen of West Orange, New Jersey, and they recently celebrated their 62nd anniversary. Bill received an Honorable Discharge as a 1st Lieutenant in June, 1953, and then enrolled in Harvard Business School, graduating in 1955. After business school, Bill began his career as an investment manager at Lehman Brothers, and then he was employed at Rockefeller Brothers Fund until 1976. Bill continued private investment management throughout the rest of his life. Year after year, Bill outperformed the major market indices. Bill gave his time and managerial talents generously to a wide range of individuals and organizations. Three areas were of particular interest to him: education, flyfishing, and conservation. Bill was the President of the Board of The Peck School in Morristown in the 1970s, and he was a loyal and devoted alumnus of The Hotchkiss School, organizing class reunions for many years. Bill and Emma Joy were avid and accomplished flyfishermen, and they traveled the world pursuing trout, salmon, and bonefish. Bill gave back to the sport in many ways - as a longtime board member and President of The Anglers' Club of New York, a supporter of Trout Unlimited, and a founding partner of Brodhead Flyfishers, LLC. Bill also served as a board member of Parkside Anglers - including 14 years as their President. Bill and Emma Joy were committed to land conservation and preservation. Bill was a founding member of The Harding Land Trust, and he was a member of the Advisory Board of The Montana Land Reliance. He also served as President and longtime board member of New Jersey Conservation Foundation. In recognition of their significant contributions to land conservation, The Montana Land Reliance honored Bill and Emma Joy in 1991 with their Conservationist of the Year Award. Bill is survived by Emma Joy, his wife of 62 years, and by his four sons: Richard of Bethesda, MD, John of Bernardsville, NJ, Andrew of Bozeman, MT, and Gordon of New York, NY. Bill is also survived by four grandchildren. Interment will be private at New Vernon Cemetery with a celebration of Bill's life to follow in the spring.
