Obituary of Edward L Koenig

Edward L. Koenig, P.E. , 91, passed away Saturday, December 8th, at Sunrise Assisted Living in Basking Ridge, of natural causes. He lived in Bernardsville, N.J. for 43 years. There will be visiting hours from 5-7 pm on Thursday, December 13, at the Gallaway and Crane Funeral home at 101 South Finley Avenue in Basking Ridge, N.J., followed by a short service at the funeral home. Ed was born in Washington, D.C., grew up in Elmhurst Queens, N.Y., and graduated in 1942 with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps immediately following WW II, having been an engineer on the Corsair for the Navy during the war. He worked for the Singer Manufacturing Company in the 1950's and for Pitney Bowes in the 1960's. He studied for and obtained his Professional Engineering license and later became self employed as a consulting engineer, working for Union Carbide, Ethicon, and dozens of other companies. He consulted on a new miniature valve for Neptune Research, Inc. in Fairfield, N.J., a firm to which he continued to consult with for over 35 years until finally retiring in 2011. When not at work, he loved to volunteer in the community. In 2011, he received an award for 50 years of service to the Boy Scouts. During these years both his sons became Eagle Scouts. He also worked with Habitat for Humanity and numerous other organizations. He was awarded Volunteer of the year in Bernardsville in 1997. He was a former president of the Shooting Star chapter of the American Air Force Association. He attended Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church for many years with his wife. Fulfilling his dream of flying, he obtained his private pilots license and enjoyed taking family and guests up for scenic flights around the area. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Helen Lawrence Cornell Koenig, whom he married in 1947, four children, Glenn, and his wife Jan of Arlington Mass., Holly Cornell of Somerset, N.J., Laurie of Rockaway, N.J., Scott, and his wife Shirleen, of Califon, N.J., grand-children, Ethan Grant of Cranston, R.I., Jennie Blodgett of Somerville, Mass., Drew Koenig of Rockaway, Heather and Ryan Koenig of Califon, and one great-grandchild, Mary Koser, of Somerville, Mass.
