Obituary of John B Pettit, Jr.

John Bartholomew Pettit Jr., 89, of Basking Ridge, NJ, passed away on March 3, 2024 surrounded by family.

Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, 506 Westfield Avenue, Westfield, NJ on Saturday March 9, 2024 at 9:00 AM.  Burial will follow at St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale, NY.  

Visitation will be held at Gallaway & Crane Funeral Home, 101 South Finley Avenue, Basking Ridge, NJ on Friday March 8, 2024 from 4:00 - 7:00 PM.  

John was born in Jamestown, NY to John (Jack) Pettit and Mary (Marie Riley)  on April 14, 1934.  John grew up in Brooklyn, NY where he attended Brooklyn Prep.  He went on to earn a BA in Arts from Villanova University and later graduated from New York Law School.  He and his wife Joan raised their family in Smithtown, NY where they lived for almost 30 years, before retiring to New Jersey.  He spent his entire career as a bank executive at Dime Savings Bank and later Long Island Saving Bank.  

John was an avid reader and enjoyed reading about World War II and the Brooklyn Dodgers.  He loved spending time with family which included attending numerous sporting events when his children were younger, family vacations with the grandchildren and hearing about the adventures of each grandchild as they found their passion.

John is survived by his children John B. Pettit III and wife Erin (Meghan, Grace, Jack and Ryan) of Westfield, NJ, Mark and wife Karen (Claire, Kelsey and Carson) of Lansdowne, VA, Joseph Pettit of Allentown, PA, Karen (Smith) and David Smith (Audrey and Ellie) of Wynnewood, PA and sister-in-law Loretta Dalton of Basking Ridge, NJ.  He is preceded in death by his wife of over 40 years Joan.
