I met Jerry about seven years ago at the Copper Kettle restaurant. We started having breakfast together once a week. He never had a bad thing to say about anybody. He always talked about his family and it was obviously loved them very much. Such a good guy.

Gerry and I shared quality moments together as comrades within our local Bernardsville VFW Post 7858. Annually while our VFW team staffed its poppy drive at the local Dunkin Donut store Gerry served as its star performer for he was able to articulate and share his direct experiences as an aviator during both World War II and the Korean War with visitors to the site. His having served during two of our nation’s wars made him unique and his friendly spirit caused many of the store’s customers to stop and spend precious minutes learning military history from Gerry. On multiple occasions I sat next to Gerry while attending Mass at St. James Church which he attended regularly when physically able and delivered the Holy Eucharist to him at times when illness prevented him from doing so. Gerry - I found to be an upbeat and good person with a strong faith in his God- I perceived him pleasant to be around. Albeit he suffered much physically during his waning years he fought his illness like the hero I found him to be.
I’ve been blessed to have known him as both a comrade and a friend. Our nation and its citizenry owes him a great debt of gratitude for his military service and the extraordinary sacrifices he made to guarantee our freedom. To his beloved family and friends I extend my sincere condolences on their physical loss of Gerry. I’m comforted however by my feeling that Gerry’s spirit still flys but now with angels about God.
