Obituary of Edward G Meininger, Jr.
Edward G. Meininger, Jr. 89 of Basking Ridge, NJ, passed away peacefully at home on December 31, 2022, with his wife of 69 years, Ruth Stewart Meininger, at his side.
Eddie was born in Lenoir, South Carolina on February 6, 1933, to Charlotte (McLean) and Edward G. Meininger Sr. He graduated from Morristown High School in Morristown, NJ in 1951.
He was a lifetime member of the Millington Volunteer First Aid Squad & Fire Company and served as a past fire chief. He was also a member of the Stirling, NJ Elks Lodge and served as an officer.
No one had a better garden than Ed Meininger. He loved his greenhouse and loved to grow tomatoes, zucchini, peppers, cucumbers, and lots of other vegetables to share with family and friends.
He was also an avid bowler in his day and bowled in a number of leagues.
Eddie and Ruth spent 30 years enjoying their shore house in Little Egg Harbor, NJ, where they loved fishing, crabbing, clamming, boating and visits from lots of family and friends.
The biggest event of each year, beginning in 1980, was going to his upstate New York property for Beer Camp (deer hunting camp) with his sons and friends. Even though Eddie could not attend for the last few years, the tradition continues with his sons and grandsons.
He was employed by the Millington Quarry (Houdaille Industries) for 28 years as a heavy equipment Operator and then as a maintenance worker for Ciba Geigy Corporation (Novartis) for last 14 years of his working career.
Once he retired and when he could still travel, Eddie spent most of his time visiting his sons, daughters-in-law and his sixteen grandchildren, who affectionately called him Poppy or Bird. He helped everyone with their various home projects and tried to attend many of his grandkids’ extracurricular activities. He truly loved his family.
In addition to his wife, Eddie is survived by six sons Thomas (Nancy), Bradley (Dana), James, Robert (Mary Kay), Glenn (Laura), Brian (Linda), sixteen grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren (with 3 more on the way) and many other friends and relatives.
We would like to thank the New Jersey Fireman’s Association and Hospice for the Home Care support they provided. We believe that support kept Eddie with us for as long as possible.
Memorial donations may be made to the Millington Volunteer Fire Company, 1891 Long Hill Road, Millington, NJ 07946.
A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family.
Happy too-da-loo Poppy!
