Obituary of Andrew Lachlan George
Andrew Lachlan George died peacefully on December 11, 2022, surrounded by his loving family after a short illness at Morristown Medical Center. He was born in Newark, NJ, on February 18, 1936, to Helene Morrison George and Lachlan Edward George. He spent his childhood in Newark and at the Jersey Shore. As a child, he contracted polio and successfully recovered. This event helped shape Andy’s determined and resolute nature that endured throughout his long life.
Andy attended St. Rose High School in Belmar and graduated from St. Benedict’s Preparatory School in Newark, NJ. Andy earned his BA from St. Peter’s University and his MBA from Pace University after dedicating time to the National Guard Reserve.
Andy spent his career working as an IT Executive for Columbia Pictures, United Artists, Transamerica, and various other corporations. After retiring from his corporate jobs, he worked as a crossing guard in Bernardsville for years and could be seen keeping his post in the center of town.
Andy was married 54 years to his beloved wife, Kathleen Reilly George. Together they created a beautiful family with four daughters and three grandchildren, residing in Bernardsville for 50 years. Andy loved to spend time with family and friends, celebrating life. Andy and Kathleen enjoyed traveling to different countries and developed a love of fine cuisine. He enjoyed cooking haute cuisine for family and friends, creating memorable special experiences for everyone. He could be found on a golf course trying to perfect his swing in his spare time. As an avid Giants fan, he could be heard giving his unsolicited advice to the players and coaches while watching on TV. Andy was always quick to offer a joke with his witty sense of humor, and he always liked to make people laugh. Andy could be known to his close friends and family as having a flair for the dramatic, and he participated in community theater at the Trilogy Repertory. Andy was a devout Catholic and was a faithful parishioner of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Bernardsville, where he enjoyed serving as a lector for many years.
Andy raised his four daughters to be as determined and steadfast as he has been throughout his life. He worked hard to create the life he had and loved to share it all with his loved ones. Andy showed his family how to live a good life and represented a life well-loved. He loved his wife and daughters tremendously and will be terribly missed by them.
He was preceded in death by his parents Helene and Lachlan George. Andy is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Kathleen; his children, Cathleen Hartjen (Paul), Amy Waldorf (Stuart), Susan George, and Laura Hurley (James); his brothers and sisters-in-law, Daniel Reilly, Eileen Morton (Bob), Robert Reilly (Marge), Marian Cardace (Tom), Cathy Reilly and Vivienne Reilly, and a host of nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his grandchildren, whom he loved very much and loved being a part of their daily lives, Andrew, Luke, and Alana Hartjen.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 14, from 5-7 PM at Gallaway & Crane funeral home in Basking Ridge, NJ. A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, December 15, at 10 am at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Bernardsville, NJ. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Andy's memory to St. Benedict’s Preparatory School, Newark, NJ (SBP.org).
