Obituary of Edward B Brue
Edward B. Brue, loving husband, father, and grandfather
Edward Brue, 79, of Basking Ridge, New Jersey, passed away on May 8th, 2021. Born in Manhattan in 1942, Ed was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
Losing his dad at an early age, Ed worked a dozen odd jobs to put himself through St. John’s University. After graduating, Ed volunteered for the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves. Though he frequently regaled his family with startling tales from his bootcamp days, he was proud to have served his country.
In his early twenties, Ed was introduced to the love of his life, Margaret (also known as Bunny) Marfeo, by mutual friends. They were married for 53 years and called Basking Ridge their home for close to half a century. Ed was a devout parishioner at St. James Church where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He also volunteered at St. Vincent dePaul Church in Stirling where he made many new friends.
His lengthy career as the director of management information systems for a global insurance company allowed him to travel internationally and hone his lifelong love for foreign languages and exotic cuisines. When he returned from overseas trips, he entertained his family with stories of Argentina's succulent steaks and wild taxi rides through Tokyo.
Because of his wide and varied knowledge base, Margaret often urged him to try out for “Jeopardy!,” a show the couple watched together nightly. Whether you had questions about computers, carpentry, or canaries, Ed had the answers.
During his retirement, Ed tackled his toughest job of all—minding his firstborn grandson, Sam, whom he taught to crawl well ahead of his time. Ed’s penchant for speed was legendary. From barreling down highways to whizzing along backroads with his favorite oldies station at full volume, the usually-reserved family man was a daredevil behind the wheel.
Always a faithful son, Ed cared for his mother throughout her life and added on to his home to provide a place for her to grow old surrounded by family.
Ed was predeceased by his father, August, and his mother, Mary (Marrone). He is survived by his wife, Margaret, his daughter, Elizabeth Alterman and her husband, Richard, his sons Christopher and his wife, Dina, and Vincent and his wife, Eve, as well as his six adoring grandchildren, Sam, Ben, Charlie, Jude, Zoe, and August. All will miss him dearly.
Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 12th, 2021 at Galloway & Crane Funeral Home, 101 S. Finley Ave. in Basking Ridge, NJ. A funeral mass will follow at 11:30 a.m. at St. James Church in Basking Ridge.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
