Obituary of Josephine Lenz

On February 28, 2021, in the peace and comfort of her home, Josephine (Hamacher) Lenz passed away. She was born in Grimlinghausen, Germany, in 1926, the middle child of Adam and Cecilia Hamacher. Formal education was sporadic during WWII, but her love of reading helped her remain an excellent student. She also loved needlework - embroidery, knitting, crocheting and especially sewing – she completed her apprenticeship in dressmaking which became her life-long trade. Josephine could fashion a beautiful outfit out of any fabric and would use pieces from various patterns for a custom fit! She and all whom she sewed for, were always in style for the cost of material and trimmings. Josephine and her husband Robert immigrated to America in 1956 and settled in Woodhaven, New York where they lived for over 60 years before moving to New Jersey to live with their daughter, son-in-law and grandsons. She was also an excellent cook and baker. Every meal was simple and delicious, but from Thanksgiving through Christmas the house smelled the best! She baked stollen and Christmas cookies by the pound for all to enjoy! Josephine is preceded in death by her wonderful husband of 62 years, Robert, her parents, and her older brother Matthias. She is survived by her younger sister, Christel; her sister-in-law, Josefa; her daughter, Patricia (John), the love-of-her-life grandsons, Adam and Stephen, and many nieces and nephews & family in Germany. Josephine lived a long, happy life, filled with family and countless friends. She always said, whatever you have to do, do it with love. When faced with an unpleasant task, try to remember this, and it will get done well. Due to COVID concerns, funeral arrangements will be private and reserved to her family. A memorial gathering of friends and family will be held in her honor at a later date. In lieu of flowers, do a good deed for someone, and you will have done it for her!
