Obituary of Stephen George Evangelides

Stephen George Evangelides of Basking Ridge, New Jersey, died peacefully Sunday, May 19th in Lincroft, New Jersey at the age of 90. He was born December 21, 1921 in Brooklyn, NY. He was a force of nature and had a rich and fulfilling life. In World War II, he served as a 2nd lieutenant in the Air Force (then the Army Air Corps)in the Philippines. After the war he completed his engineering degree at New York University and then earned an MBA, also at New York University. He was happily married to Alice Helen Sofis from 1952 until her untimely death in 1985. He retired from Schering Plough at the age of 73 after a very satisfying career in engineering. He traveled widely in Europe and the US and in his late 70's to China and at 81 to South Africa. He was an active board member of Literacy Volunteers of New Jersey and a long time member and leader of the Kiwanis club of Somerset Hills, New Jersey. He was fiercely proud of his Greek Heritage, loved to garden and was an amazing cook. He retained his great charm and good looks until the end. He is survived by his son, Stephen George Evangelides, Jr. of Middletown, NJ, daughter Christine (Tina) Evangelides Donovan, son-in-law Edward J. Donovan III, granddaughter, Alexandra Donovan and brother Peter Evangelides, all of New York. Services will be held on Friday May 25, 2012 at the St. Andrew's Greek Orthodox Church, 1447 Sussex Turnpike, Randolph, NJ 07869 at 10:30 am, followed by interment in the Somerset Hills Memorial Park Cemetery and then a luncheon. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with the Family on Thursday May 24, 2012 at the Gallaway & Crane Funeral Home, 101 South Finley Avenue, Basking Ridge, NJ 07920 from 6-8 pm.
