Obituary of James W Perling

James William Perling

Loving father and friend

James W. Perling ("Jim"), 60, of Bernardsville, New Jersey, passed away on Tuesday, July 23, 2019, after a long illness. He is deeply and profoundly mourned by his family.  He was a devoted father and will never be forgotten. Jim was born in 1959 in Oneida, New York to William George Perling and Nancy Carson Perling.  In the early 1960s, his family moved from Oneida to Nashua, New Hampshire where his father became a logistics specialist at Hanscom Air Force base.  In 1977, Jim graduated from Bishop Guertin High School in Nashua.  He went on to study chemistry at the University of New Hampshire and graduated in 1984 with honors from Northeastern University with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering.  Upon graduation, Jim began working as a chemical engineer for Rohm & Haas in Philadelphia, which later became Morton Chemical and finally Huntsman Chemical.  While at Morton, Jim was based in the mid-western U.S., and England, and switched from engineering to sales.  In 1996, he graduated with an MBA from the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business.  In 1998, while still at Morton but now living in New York City, Jim began consulting for PeaceWorks LLC where he was the Director of Finance and Business Development.  In 2002, Jim moved to Dow Chemical (now DuPont) where he would spend the next 18 years in the Building Solutions division, working extensively with architects and real estate developers in the New York City and surrounding area.  Jim was passionate about the environment, and was happy to be a member of the U.S. Green Building Council.  In his spare time, Jim was a highly skilled carpenter.  He successfully rehabilitated several residential properties in New York City and New Jersey using his construction skills.  Jim also enjoyed cooking at home for his family, attending his sons' sporting events, and spending time outdoors hiking, bicycling, or working in the yard.  He was also a wood-burning stove enthusiast.  Jim was a devoted and loving father, and his children's well-being was his primary life focus.  Jim is survived by his wife Christina Thompson-Perling and their two sons, William Thompson Perling and John Carson Perling; sister Anne Bretz of Nevada, Texas, and her husband Scott; brother Richard Perling of Melrose, Massachusetts; and sister Jean Mandirola of Somers, Connecticut, and her husband Todd.  Funeral arrangements are being handled by Gallaway & Crane in Basking Ridge. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Melanoma Research Foundation (https://melanoma.org)
