Obituary of Lucie O Brown
Lucie Mae Brown (née Oakes), 92, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2018 at Fellowship Senior Living in Basking Ridge, NJ.
Lucie was born in Charleston, WV on October 13, 1925, the eldest of two daughters to Nelson Beauford Oakes and Virginia Chittum Oakes. She graduated from Duke University in 1946 with a BA in early childhood education. It was during her time at Duke that she fatefully met her future husband, Walter Lyons Brown. The two were traveling home for Christmas vacation in 1942 when their paths crossed at the railroad station in Greensboro, NC. They were married on June 14, 1946 and enjoyed 71 loving years together. Lucie devotedly cared for their four children – Stephen, Stuart, Virginia, and Keith – before returning to teaching at Summit Child Care Center. Lucie eventually became a director at Wilson School before retiring full time. Retirement allowed her more time to hone her green thumb, bake for visitors, help at her daughter’s child care business, and enjoy time with friends and family across the country. She also freely gave of her time and served God as a Deacon and by teaching Sunday School for over 30 years.
Lucie is predeceased in death by her husband, Walter Lyons Brown. She is survived by their four children and spouses – Stephen and Michelle Brown, Stuart and Peggy Brown, Virginia and Donald Mayer-Brown, and Keith and Natalie Brown, as well as nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren – Amy and Ken Nelson (Eliza, Martin, Caleb, and Kenna), Rachel and Adam Morehouse (Elena and Silas), David and Renee Brown (Naomi and Chloe), Sarah Mayer-Brown, Elizabeth Mayer-Brown, Julissa Brown, Katarina Brown, Adrienne Poirier, and Kathryn Poirier.
