Obituary of Richard F. Schuler

Richard Francis Schuler, 86, of Basking Ridge died on Friday, February 3rd, 2012 at home surrounded by his family. He was born on January 21, 1926 in Cranford to William Joseph Schuler and Anna Caroline Schatz. Mr. Schuler was a World War II veteran having served in the US Army from 1944 to 1946. Following his military service he worked in Tokyo, Japan as the Retail Sales Operation Manager for the Japan Central Army Post Exchange until 1959. Mr. Schuler returned to the United States in 1959 and opened a rental business, Astro Rents, with his close friend Joseph Marzucco. After his retirement in 1986 he volunteered his time at Messiah Lutheran Church in Plainfield helping the day care and church. Mr. Schuler and his wife enjoyed traveling every year to their winter condo in Naples, Florida. He also enjoyed fishing with his son in law and grandchildren at Lake Rideau. Mr. Schuler was an avid woodworker and he had a passion for railroading. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marie; his daughter Janet Stager, son in law Peter and 2 grandchildren Adam and Zachary all of Basking Ridge, his stepson Buck Matsunami and his wife Akiko, grandson, Bucky Matsunami of Fullerton California; his sister Helen Heck and brother William Schuler. Funeral services will be held on Saturday February 11, 2012 at 3pm at Somerset Hills Lutheran Church in Basking Ridge. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the VFW Bernardsville Memorial Post 7858, PO Box 253, Bernardsville, NJ 07924 or the American Heart Association.
