Robert Long

Obituary of Robert S. Long

Dr. Robert Sidney Long, age 93, passed away on February 13, 2010, at Fellowship Village Health Center after a long and difficult struggle with Alzheimer's disease. Bob was born on March 30, 1916 in Chicago, IL to Ethel Anderson and Sidney Simon Long. He grew up and attended school in the Midwest. He earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry at the age of 24. He then moved to Bridgewater, New Jersey and was employed by The American Cyanamid Company for 41 years. He worked on the development of the Cyalume bulbs, popularly known as light or glow sticks. He eventually became a senior executive involved with mergers and acquisitions for the company. Highly regarded for his negotiating and diplomatic skills, he traveled to Japan for business several times and was always very warmly received. Bob worked as a consultant for American Cyanamid for an additional 5 years after retirement. Bob married Mary Faith Moodry in 1943. Mary and Bob raised three daughters, Patricia Wildgen, Dr Nancy Long, and Sydney Long. They provided a loving, enriched life for them, with childhoods filled with high expectations and the opportunities and support to meet them. Mary died suddenly in 1985 - a huge loss for all of us. In 1998 Bob moved to Fellowship Village Retirement Community. There he met Babs Shrader who introduced him to a wide and varied social life. They grew to love each other and Babs continued to provide support and comfort as Alzheimer's disease steadily restricted Bob's quality of life. Bob is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law: Patricia and Tom Wildgen of Madison, WI, Nancy Long and Marc Waldor of New York City, and Sydney Long and Scott Kalter of Lyme, NH. He took great pleasure in the lives of his nine grandchildren and their spouses: Michael and Denise Wildgen, Melissa and Jamey Rootes, Michelle Wildgen and Steve O'Brien, Erika Blumberg and Gregg Barron, Jesse Blumberg and Rita Donahue, Joshua Blumberg, Lindsay Long-Waldor, Vanessa and Ron Ford, and Elizabeth and Sam Fisher. He is also survived by 6 great-grandchildren: Christopher, Caroline, Justin, Taylor, Miles, and Ronnie. Goodbye, Dad! You have had a full life and we thank you for everything. A memorial service will be 11AM on Feb 15th at Fellowship Village in the Fellowship Hall located 8000 Fellowship Road, Basking Ridge, NJ.
