Obituary of Gerard Hughes

Gerard Hughes, age 81, passed away in his sleep on August 3rd, 2011 at Berkeley Heights Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Gerard, a long time resident of Basking Ridge is survived by son Steven, daughter Amy, sister Margaret Campion of Great Mills, Maryland, companion Joan Sauer, and many nieces and nephews. Gerard, the son of the late Margaret (nee Murray) and Joseph P. Hughes, was born in Harrison, New Jersey and was the youngest of seven children. Gerard was predeceased by brothers Joseph, Arthur, John, and William; his sister Virginia "Jean" Ford; and his former spouse Ingaborg. Gerard, a graduate of Seton Hall University, worked as Treasurer for ITT Avionics and then Executive Chauffer for Terra Industries in New York City. "Jerry" as many knew him, was a former resident of Florham Park where he served as Mayor, Police Chief, and as a member of the Fire Department. He was a member and past president of Somerset Hills AARP, was an active member of the Spring Ridge Social Club, the Leisure Club of Basking Ridge, and the Sons of the American Legion in Stirling, NJ. Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Luke's Roman Catholic Church at 300 Clinton Street, North Plainfield at 11:30 AM on Saturday, August 6th, 2011. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to St. Luke's Church.
