Obituary of Robert H. Boorujy

ROBERT H. BOORUJY MARINE ENGINEERING ADVISOR I Robert H. Boorujy, a retired mechanical engineer with a lifetime career in ship design and construction died on April 12, 2011 at Fellowship Village, Basking Ridge, New Jersey. He was 81 years old and lived in Basking Ridge, N.J. since 1968. Mr. Boorujy retired in 1990 as an engineering advisor in mechanical and piping design for sea going oil tankers at Exxon International, Inc. He worked for Exxon for 20 years. He received commendations, for exceptional performance and results while stationed as a machinery design and construction superintendent at China Shipbuilding Corp. in Kaohsiung, Taiwan during the design and construction of four 90,000 DW ton tankers. In addition, Mr. Boorujy was also directly involved with the design and construction of nine other tankers for Exxon. He assisted with the design and construction and/or conversion of nearly all other tankers that were afloat on his retirement date. Mr. Boorujy worked for Gibbs and Cox, Inc., a naval architect and marine engineering firm, designing Navy destroyers prior to joining Exxon. A native of Chatham, New Jersey, he graduated from Lafayette College with a BS in Industrial Engineering and also received a MS degree in Mechanical Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology. During and after the Korean War he served in the US Navy for three and one half years which included 36 months as an engineering officer aboard the Essex class aircraft carrier, USS Antietam. He retired from the Naval Reserve in1967. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7858. He was also a Life Member of Tau Beta Pi (national engineering honor society), The American Society of Mechanical Engineers and Deborah Hospital Foundation of Browns Mills, New Jersey. Mr. Boorujy was a member of the Somerset Hills Lutheran Church in Basking Ridge where he served 9 years as a trustee, 32 years as an usher and 8 years as a teller. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jean Kuebler Boorujy, a daughter Joanne and her husband Robert Catudal and granddaughters Christine and Lisa of Katy, Texas, two sons, Captain James Boorujy USN and his wife Alison and granddaughters Abigail, Emily and Katherine of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and William Boorujy and his wife Janet and granddaughter Elizabeth and grandson US Marine Pfc. Robert Boorujy of Livermore, California. He is also survived by his brother Joseph and his wife Zehra of Florham Park, NJ and nephews Peter and Arthur and their families.
